The common ancestor of the famly in America was Andrew Proudfoot who was born in Scotland about 1700. He was married twice. There were four sons and two daughters by the first wife. Andrew and James came to America in 1754 and Robert and David who came in 1759. They settled in York Co , Pennsylvania. Two names are possibilities for the first and second wifes: Janet Prop and Elizabeth Peebles. Andrew's brother, James' descendents named a child Hugh Peebles Proudfit. However, this still could have been a naming for a stepgrandmother rather than a grandmother.
