Biography

Lupea [Lupala] Ka'ahanui Pupuka was born in May 1833 in Lahina, island of Maui, Kingdom of Hawaii, according to the US Census of 1900, where she was enumerated as "Kaahanui Lopes," b: May 1833 in Hawaii, 67 years old, married to Antonio J. Lopes, 1832–1908, since 1879 [21 years]. She was of Hawaiian ethnicity. On 1 June 1900 she was living in a house she owned in the Waialua District (northern part), ED 35, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, United States. Her household included 2 "Boarders": Mahema Kehaloha, 67, (b: May 1833), Hawaiian, and Tommy Kehaloha, 19 (b: Jan. 1882), Hawaiian, a "Laborer". Kaahanui declared she had had 7 children but only 2 were still living as of June 1900. Although Antonio J. Lopes was still alive, they did not live together and it's known he had several children with a different woman between 1890-1897. [1]

Antonio Joaquim Lopes was her 2nd husband, whom Lupea Kaahanui had married on 12 May 1879. She had earlier been married to New Jersey-born Henry Gordon (1832-1879), who had died on 5 February 1879 of pneumonia after nearly drowning in the Pacific Ocean at Honolulu, Oahu, Kingdom of Hawaii. [2]

The couple had been married in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, on 16 May 1854. They had had the following 4 known children in Hawaii:[2]

  1. Eli Gordon, 1855–1888
  2. Maria Elizabeth Gordon, 11 May 1861 – 1943
  3. Margaret Meleana Gordon, 1862–before 1900
  4. Emmaline Gordon, 1868–1881

and, according to the 1900 Census, two others, both of whom must have died as infants. Infant mortality was very high in 19th Century Hawaii.

After Henry Gordon's tragic death at 45 years old, she had remarried to Antonio J. Lopes the same year in Honolulu, Oahu, Kingdom of Hawaii. It's not clear whether or not he continued to consider his first wife as still married. Antonio & Lupea had a daughter in 1882. After about 1887, they lived apart although no offical divorce was recorded: [2]

  1. Mary Lopes, 1882–1949

Maria Elizabeth Gordon and Mary Lopes were her 2 daughters who lived beyond 1900.

Antonio J. Lopes passed away on 9 March 1908 at Waialua District, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, USA. Lupea Lopes passed away a few years later at 16 March 1916 in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Territory, USA. [2] He has a Find A Grave Memorial. [3]
