Biography

Ezekiel Pine or Pyne was born in 1863, in Annapolis, Nova Scotia to David Pyne and Jane Dukeshire.[1]

My great great grandfather, Ezekiel, immigrated to the US in 1885 shortly after his mother, Jane (Dukeshire) Pyne , died. His name was actually William Ezekiel Pyne, but he used his middle name as his first name. He had had an older sibling named William but that sibling died at an early age. A woman at the historical society in Nova Scotia told me it was a common practice back then that if parents lost a child they would use the name again later for a different child. Ezekiel came to the US and he first lived and worked in Massachusetts as a black smith...and then very shortly thereafter he moved to Spragueville in New Hampshire (which is now North Swanzey NH) where he worked as a mechanic for the Sprague family for a short time and then worked in a box factory in West Swanzey. He married Alice Larkin from Marlborough on May 25, 1889, and moved to property he bought in West Swanzey (Pine St in West Swanzey is named after the Pine family. The discrepancy in spelling is due to the town secretary applying her own spelling of the name). Ezekiel had assistance in building his first house from his older brother Zebulon. In addition to working in the box factory, Ezekiel also had a farm with horses and cows. He kept bees. He was a fireman on the town's fire team...and he raised two children. My mom said she remembers him as a good natured but somewhat stoic old man...not too surprising in light of his British baptist heritage. (RB)

He married Alice M Larkin 25 May 1889 in Marlborough, Cheshire, New Hampshire, daughter of Edward Larkin and Annie (___). His occupation is listed as Mechanic. [2] She was born Sep 1867 in Dublin, Madison Co., Ohio, and died Bef. 1930 in New Hampshire.

Children of Ezekiel Pyne and Alice Larkin are:

i. Ernest Leslie Pyne, born 26 Dec 1889 in New Hampshire; died Jan 1976 in New Hampshire.

ii. Stella M Pyne, born 16 Jul 1893 in New Hampshire; died Feb 1981 in Keene, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire.

Notes for Stella M Pyne: In the 1930 census, she was working as an operative in a watch factory in Waltham, Mass. She was boarding with a Lowell family.

Notes for Ezekiel Pyne: He appears in the 1900 & 1910 censuses in West Swanzey, New Hampshire, with his family. He had immigrated in 1885, according to the 1900 census. He was a boxmaker in 1900, a sawyer in a box shop in 1910. In the 1930 census, he was living with his son and family in the same location, on Railroad St. in West Swanzey. He was a widower.

Ezekiel Pyne died 02 Jan 1939 at Cheshire, West Swanzey, New Hampshire at the age of 74[3]
