Biography

Calogero Maria Quaglino is born 29 August 1864 in Corleone and baptized the next day. Although this record is ambiguous about Calogero's gender (the verb "natum" is masculine, but "Calogeram" is in the feminine form), future records confirm he is a boy. Calogero is the son of Leoluca Quaglino and Maria Felicia Scherma. His godparents are Filippo Quaglino (possibly his grandfather) and Francisca Cascio, the wife of Leoluca Virgadamo.[1]

On the SS Plata, departing Palermo and arriving 9 October 1889 in New York:

218. Giuseppe Quaglino, 43 (b.1845), tailor: his real name is Filippo; he is Giovanna Nicastro’s husband

219. Giovanna Nicastro, 32 (b. 1857), housekeeper

220. Ma. Felice Quaglino, 13 (b. 1876)

221. Giovanni Quaglino, 10 (b. 1879)

222. Leoluca Quaglino, 9 (b. 1880)

223. Giuseppe Quaglino, 4 (b. 1885)

224. Calogero Quaglino, seven months (b. Mar 1889)

225. Calogero Quaglino, 25 (b. 1864) (this is Filippo's brother)[2][3][4]

Calogero marries Vita Moscato, daughter of Carmelo Moscato and Francesca La Sala, on 18 November 1893 in Manhattan.[5]

Vita and Calogero have at least five children: Leoluca (1895), Nicola (1897), Maria Felicia (c. 1900), and twins Francesca and Salvatrice (c. 1902).

Leoluca is born 25 September 1895 in Manhattan.[6]

Nicola, an infant, dies on 8 December 1897 in Manhattan at 2130 2nd Ave. He was born in NYC. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery.[7]

On the SS Citta di Napoli sailing from Palermo on 1 October 1903 and arriving in the port of New York on 15 October 1903, these passengers from Corleone are bound for New York:

16. Calogero Maria Quaglino, 29 (b. 1874---he is 39), married, laborer, connected to lines 17-21 with a bracket. Was previously in the US from 1889-1903. Joining his nephew Giovanni Quaglino at 112-113 E. 2nd Ave. Has $20.

Quaglino-199 and Quaglino-52 appear to represent the same person because: One has an approximate date of birth and other biographical information, and the other is a close match on the DOB. Same parents, same name.
