Biography

Peter was listed as between 26 and 44 years of age on US census records for the years 1800 and 1810, so the earliest he could have been born was 1766. Until a record documenting his birthdate is found, a good estimate is that he was born after 1765.

Peter was a son of Peter Quakingbush (1734-1793) and Rachel Starkey (1730-<1793) and was listed in the elder Peter's will dated 24 July 1793. (See gallery for transcribed version.)

Peter married Mary (Newlin) Quakenbush (1772-1834) before October 1791, when Mary Quakingbush (formerly Newlin) was disavowed at the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting (Quaker) for her marriage "out of unity."[1] (Later, when Mary died, her husband was listed as Peter Quakenbush.) Peter and Mary had at least five children:
Thomas Quakenbush (1797-1862)
Nathaniel Quakenbush (1803-1892)
Isaac Thomas Quakenbush (1806-1874)
Rhoda (Quakenbush) McDaniel (1809-1899)
William Quakenbush, 1802-1881
Given that the first child listed above (Thomas) was born in 1797, but they married in 1791 or earlier, there were likely children born before Thomas.

In the 1800 census, Peter was in Hillsborough, Chatham, North Carolina.[2] The household ages were as follows:
1 male 26-44 (Peter)
1 male 16-25 (a brother, farm worker?)
4 males under 10
1 female 26-44 (Mary)
1 female 10-15

In the 1810 census, Peter was in Chatham, North Carolina, United States.[3] NOTE: The transcription for this record says JOHN Quakingbush, but looking at the document, it is PETER Quakingbush. (Quakenbush has varied spellings, including Quackenbush, Quakingbosch and others.) The household ages for this census were:
1 male 26-44 (Peter)
1 male 16-25
3 males 10-15
3 males under 10
1 female 26-44 (Mary)
2 females under 10

There are records for service in the 1812 conflict for Peter Quakenbush in Chatham County, North Carolina. This could be him or perhaps a nephew.

After the 1812 records, there are no more records for Peter. In the 1820 census for Chatham County, Mary Quakenbush is listed as the head of household. 1820. Because of this, and no more records for him, his death date is listed as 'before 1820.' It is possible, but unlikely, that he lived longer.

  • Mary NEWLIN is the oldest child of James and Deborah (Lindley) Newlin. Mary married PETER Quakenbush BEFORE Oct. 1, 1791. Mary Newlin Quakenbush was buried on July 26, 1834.
