Biography

John Race was born to James and Susan Race in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire and was christened on 02 Sep 1716.^[1]

John was the son of a labourer but by the time his first child was born he was an innkeeper and by the birth of his last child George in 1771 he had become a farmer as well.

On 03 Oct 1744 John married Mary Gunthorpe in Ayot St Peter in Hertfordshire. They were both from Biggleswade at the time although there is no record of Mary's birth there.^[2]

John and Mary had 12 children over 23 years. At least five of the children did not survive to adulthood.

John was still an innkeeper when he died in 1778 and he was buried on 25 Mar 1778 at St Andrews Biggleswade^[3]

Mary Rase was born in Biggleswade, Bedford, England to John and Mary Race. She was christened on 06 Apr 1751. She was buried on 21 Apr 1751 at St Andrew churchyard^[8][9]

Samuel Race was born in Biggleswade, Bedford, England to John and Mary Race. He was christened on 30 May 1752. Samuel Rase was buried on 03 Jun 1752 in St Andrew churchyard^[10][11]
