Biography

John Race was born in about 1823 in Colne, Lancashire, England to George Race and Jane (Robinson) Race.

He lived in Barnard Castle, County Durham from a young age and was christened there when he was a few years old, so he gave that as his birthplace on some census records.

John Race, son of George, a weaver, & Jane, was christened on 24 Jan 1827 in Barnard Castle - his brothers Anthony and James were christened on the same day.[1]

In 1841 John Race (age 15-19, Weaver) lived at Bridge Gate in Barnard Castle with his father George (40-44, Weaver), mother Jane (40-44), and seven siblings: Anthony (20-24, Weaver), James (15-19, Weaver), Phillis (12), Aleviah (10), George (7), Frances (4), and Ruth (2), as well as four others: Ambrose White (20-24, Weaver), Elenor White (20-24, Dressmaker), George White (3), and Ann White (4 months).[2]

John Race (of full age, Bachelor, Weaver, residing at Barnard Castle, son of George Race, Weaver) and Mary Todd (of full age, Spinster, residing at Startforth, daughter of Michael Todd, Mason) were married on 14 Jul 1844 at the parish church in Startforth, Yorkshire - the witnesses were Wiliam Blackburn & Ann Emmerson.[3] The marriage was registered in Teesdale, Durham in the third quarter of the year.[4]

John and Mary had eight children:

  5. Thomas Race (1854-)
  6. Mary Jane Race (1857-1857)
  7. Sarah Ann Race (1859-)

In 1861 John "Roel" [Race] (age 38, Carpet Weaver) lived at 176 New Street in Liversedge, Yorkshire with his wife Mary (39, House Wife) and four children: Jonathan (16, Carpet Weaver), Henry (10, Scholar), Thomas (6, Scholar), and Sarah (2).[5]

In 1871 John Race (age 48, Carpet Weaver) lived at 9 Well Street in Flush, Liversedge with his wife Mary (49) and three children: Henry (19, Carpet Weaver), Thomas (16, Carpet Weaver), and Mary A (6, Scholar).[6]

In 1881 John Race (age 59, Carpet Weaver) lived at Well Street in Flush, Liversedge with his wife Mary (59) and daughter Mary Ann Race (16, Rug Weaver).[7]

In 1891 John Race (age 68, Carpet Weaver) lived at Well Street in Liversedge with his wife Mary (69), daughter Mary Ann Pollard (26), and son-in-law Harry Pollard (25, Carpet Weaver).[8]

John's wife passed away in 1897.

John Race passed away in 1898, aged 76 years. His death was registered in Dewsbury, Yorkshire in the last quarter of the year.[9]
