Biography

George Wood Rankin, 1882-1958, was born and died in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. He was the son of Alexander Rankin (1833 Scotland - 1893 SLC, Utah), and Mary Patterson Wood (1835 Scotland - 1902 SLC). Ancestors, shown below:

George Wood Rankin,21, married Lillie Maud Morrissey, 20, on 12 August 1903 in SLC, SL County, Utah. They had twelve children, born between 1904 and 1924, including two sets of twins. The first set of twins, Robert and Roberta, born in 1915, both died in infancy. George Wood Rankin died on 25 September 1958 in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1900, the Rankin family lived at 544 W. 1st S. St., Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. All members of the family were born in Scotland, as were their parents, except as noted. All could read and write. The household included Mary Rankin, 63, a widow, born in Dec, 1837; who had had 15 children, nine of whom were living; her children, Kate, 31; twins Jennie and Maggie, 25; Sarah, 22; and George, 16, born in Utah in April 1884, an apprentice railroad machinist. In 1910, the Rankin family lived in a rented house at 36 S. 5th W. Street, Salt Lake City Utah. The household included George W. Rankin, 28, born in Utah, parents b. Scotland, a railroad air brake inspector; his wife of seven years, Maud, 27, who had had three children, none of whom were living, b. Utah, father b. NY, mother b. UT; his sisters, both b. Scotland, Janie, 37; and Kate, 47; and two male boarders, both railroad workers. [5]

On 12 September 1918 I Salt Lake City, Utah, George Wood Rankin, 36, registered for the WWI Draft. He lived with his wife, Maud M. Rankin, at 921 W. 3rd S. St., SLC, Utah. He worked as Chief car inspector for D&RG Railroad. Rankin was born 8 April 1882, and was tall, with a medium build, grayish blue eyes and brown hair. [6] [7]

In 1920, the Rankin family lived at 921 W. 3rd S. Street, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. The family included George W. Rankin, 37, a railroad shop car foreman; his wife Maude, 36; their children, all in school except for the youngest two: George M., 15; Alexander, 14; Matt K., 12; Maude M., 8; Bernice, 6; Marion, 3; and William M., 1; and George’s sister, Jennie Rankin, 41 (listed as b. In Utah. She was b. In Scotland). All members of the family were born in Utah. [8]

In 1930, the Rankins lived at 921 W. 3rd S. St., Salt Lake City, Utah. All members of the household were born in Utah, except as noted. The family included George W. Rankin, 48, a pipe fitter for a light company, who owned their house, valued at $2500, and had a radio, who married at age 21; his wife, Maude M., 47, who married at 20; their children, Maude, 19, a Bell Telephone operator; Bernice, 17; Marion, 13; William, 11; and twins, Jack and Frank, 8; and George’s sister, Jennie Rankin, 54, single, b. Scotland, a packer at a candy factory. [9]

In 1940, the Rankin family lived at 921 W. 3rd S. St., Salt Lake City, Utah. The household included George W. Rankin, 57; wife Maude, 57; children, Clayton, 16; Jack, 18; Frank, 18; and William M., 21. [10]

In 1950, the Rankins lived at 921 W. 3rd S. Street, SLC, Utah. The household included George W. Rankin, 67, a retired bus line mechanic, not a veteran, who received $395 in 1939 in outside income; his wife, Maude, 67; their son, Matt K. Rankin, 44, a dairy office manager, listed as head of household; his wife, Bernice; and daughter, Carol W., 16, cashier at a cinema. [11]

George Wood Rankin, 76, a retired railroad car foreman, died in his home at 921 W. 3rd S. St., Salt Lake City, Utah. The informant to his death was his wife, Maude Morrissey Rankin. George was born in SLC on 8 April 1882, the son of Alexander Rankin and Mary Wood. [12]

George Wood Rankin is buried at Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah. Among family interred there are his parents, several siblings, his wife, eight of their children, and other family. [13] [14]
