Susan Ray was born in 1706, in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. Her father, Orbel Ray, was 27 and her mother, Rebecca Garnham, was 27. She was baptized on 29 November 1706 in St Mary's Church, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.

She married James Oakes on 18 February 1739,^[1] in Bradfield St George, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom. They were the parents of 1 son and 4 daughters.

Susan died on 2 October 1788, in her hometown, at the age of 79. She was buried in St Jame's, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.

Her will was dated 3 May 1785 and was proved on 6 November 1788.
