Biography

Thomas Emmet Ray, son of William Ray and Mary Elizabeth Duncan, was probably born in Boone County, Iowa since he appears in the 1870 Census there at age 2 months with his family. By 1880, he has moved with his family to Kirwin, Phillips County, Kansas where he is listed as a ten year old male living with his family.

The next data we have on him comes from his father's obituary printed in the Kirwin Independent Newspaper on August 1, 1898 where he is listed as Emmet Ray of Ft. DuChene, Utah (Probably Fort Duchesne, Utah).

This is the extent of the knowledge anyone researching from the US knew about Thomas. Theories I heard as a child ranged from his being killed in the "wild west" (perhaps even by 'Indians'), to his running off to South America in the company of, or in pursuit of, "Outlaws". But the truth seems to be that he was involved in mining in the American west. And followed this venture to Chile, where he had some success, found a wife, and raised a family.

From his family in Chile: He apparently left home at a young age due to disagreements with his parents. He spent many years in the American West, then followed a mining concern to Chile at some point before World War I. By 1818, he met a woman with whom he had five children. It is from descendants of this family that we learn all we know about Thomas Emmet Ray. Including that he passed away in January of 1952.

Thomas Emmet Ray's grandson reached out to me from Chile (I assume) to confirm our connection. I did try to find any other details on Thomas after his wife in Chile with six children and William Ray Catalan having a daughter. Here is his great-grandson's message to me:

My great-grandfather was Thomas Emmet Ray, born in Boone, Iowa, in 1870 he immigrated to South America in 1913 and traveled to different countries looking for gold and finally stayed here in Chile in the Andes mountains, where the Americans were in charge of the copper production of mineral "El Teniente" and they had built a city camp in the middle of the mountains, my grandfather was called William Ray and was born in Sewell, O'Higgins region Chile in 1920 died on January the 11th 1993.
