  • From RECTOR FAMILY RECORDS He was one of the first settlers of Kaskaskia, Ill. When his brother, John, was killed by an Indian while surveying Gallatin Co. Ill in 1805. Stephen surveyed the county in 1807 as Deputy Surveyor under direction of his bros. William Rector.
  • Stephen Rector was commissioned at Capt Russell in the U.S.Mounted Rangers of Captain James B Morre's Company. He was 3 rd lt. Aug 31, 1813 and July 13 1814 was made 2 nd Lt. of the rangers by command of the president James Madison.
  • A disagreement among the Board of Directors of the The Bank of St. Louis caused Stephen to lock the doors until it was settled. His brothers Elias and William were directors of the bank.
  • Land promoters at St Louis, Mo. were Stephen, Thomas and Williams Rector. He was in the war of 1812.
  • Stephen Rector of the truculent and fighting tribe of Rectors aroused the crowd celebrating the arrival of the first steamship to Boone Lick Co. by saying " May the Missourians defend their rights, if necessary, even at the expense of blood if necessary, against the unprecedented restrictions which was attempted to be imposed upon them by the Congress of the United States " On Thursday July 20, 1826 the Missouri Republican newspaper published this item " on Sunday evening the death of Mr. Stephen Rector."
  • Among historical data of Missouri states that Stephen Rector of St Louis to the second State Legislature in 1822
  • He was one of the passengers of the INDEPENDENCE, the first steamship to reach Howard Co. Mo. in 1819. His brother, Elias, also was on the boat. The first attempt to travel the Missouri by steamboat.
  • Stephen Rector stated " May the Missourians defend their rights, if necessary, even at the expense of blood, against the unprecedented restriction which was attempted to be imposed on them by the Congress of the United States.
  • From CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF MISSOURI -In the War of 1812 Captain Stephen Rector of the Illinois Rangers were sent up the Mississippi River to reinforce the fort at Prairie by Chien with 44 regulars in another body under Lt. Campbell . Above Rock Island ,at the rapids, Rector's boat got ahead and at a favorable point the Indians attacked Campbell's boat destroying nearly all the troops and set the boat on fire.Rector, seeing Campbell's predicament let his boat drift alongside the other. Amid the deadly fires from the Indians he lashed his boat to the other, rescued the survivors, carrying off every dead soldier and then left the burning boat to the Indians.

  • From The COURT OF COMMON PLEASIN Kaskaskia, Co of Randolph, Ill. Territory, Stephen Rector owed 136 dollars and 50 dollars damage to Wm Shannon and would not pay till ordered by the court.
