Biography

Caution - Unknown Origins: it is frequently seen that he is the son of Daniel Reed and Mary Turner however they lived in Abington, Plymouth, Massachusetts, a son Matthias does not appear in Abington Vital Records, they never lived in Vermonth where the birth of Mathias is usually seen, and Daniel's will[1] written while this Mathias was still alive names only three sons, Daniel, John and Jacob. For these reasons these parents have been detached and should not be reattached absent primary source documentation.

There is considerable ambiguity and uncertainty regarding Matthias Reed and his wife Elizabeth Day's origins. The only place Elizabeth's last name appears is in the Cleveland Genealogy.[2] The Cleveland Genealogy was exceptionally well-researched for its day but does not indicate from whence comes Elizabeth's maiden name though likely from descendants given the brothers Cleveland research methods.

Matthias place of origin is unknown but generally seen as Vermont. New Hampshire marriage records include the marriage of a Phinehas Reed and Elizabeth Day on 19 Mar 1789.[3] This record contains no additional information and was transcribed from earlier records in 1906.

The family is found in Sandgate, Bennington, Vermont in 1800, 1810 and 1820.[4][5][6]

Both Betsy Reed Roach (wife of Edward Roach) and Rebecca Reed Carpenter (wife of Russell Carpenter) indicate in several US Census that their father was born in England. Also, Mathias Reed of Sandgate was alive on 22 August and 30 October 1822, the date of a sale of property to Sterling Sherman of Rupert, VT (Sandgate Deeds)
