MaryAnn was born in 1818. She was the daughter of Thomas Reid and Mary Lusk. She passed away in 1828.
Thomas & Mary Reid wrote of their young daughter's death in a letter to son, Robert REID and nephew, James L. WRIGHT on January 11, 1829. Both young men had migrated with other family members to Tennessee.
"But alas, alas, early in the morning of the 17th October last, that Beautiful Babe, your sister Mary Ann42 was called upon to wing her way to rest and leave the remains, her mortal body, for us to imitate that courteous woman of the kind of behavior since your sister’s marriage. She had endeared herself in her parents and all her brothers and sisters affection here. She was esteemed, I believe, by all who know her, and raised the parents’ hope of comfort in her well doing. But alas how soon frustrated she lay (or rather was sick for she did not lay all the time, as she would often wish to assist your mama in the kitchen, and on 'till about the three last days) nine days. And although very greatly tormented, she bore with remarkable patience, kept her senses and speech until after dark of the same night in which she died. About one or two o'clock, her cousin T. J. Wright43 gave an obituary notice to the Pioneer office which was therein inserted.
Thus, OBITUARY --- "Even Youth Will Die - Dead in this District on Friday the 17th instant (viz October) Mary Ann, daughter of Thos. Reid, Esq, age ten years & nineteen days. Whoever had acquaintance with this this interesting girl must deeply regret her loss. The following motto strikes me a strictly applicable to her case "Viz non emmis Maria" for while her parents and friends lament her loss in grievous tears, her memory is forever with all her acquaintances until time shall turn them in the wide Abyss of Eternity, gifted by nature with a peculiar endowment of speech and reason, exceeding by far what is generally evinced in so tender an age. To a stranger she was pleasing and intelligent, and to us in an affectionate and endearing relation. Farewell dear youth, a long farewell. Though you have gone before strict truth doth to us plainly tell we soon shall meet to part no more.”
