James Rettie was baptised on 16 Sep 1839 in the parish of Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[1] The baptism record says " n s of James RETTIE and Jane THOM."

On the 1861 Census, James (age 21) is working as a cattleman at Netherton, Longside.
James RETTIE married Jane BRUCE on 10 Jan 1863 in the Parish of Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[2]. James was 23 years old and working as a Farm Servant in Longside. Jane was 26 years old and working as a House Servant. James' father is given as James RETTIE, Mason (deceased) and is mother as Jane THOM. Jane's father is given as David BRUCE, Farmer and mother as Margaret PARK (deceased). David BRUCE is one of the witnesses.
In 1871 James and his family lived at Mill Farm, Rathen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[3] James worked as a Farm Servant. The household has 5 children: William (age 11), James (8), Margaret (6), David (4) and Isabella (2). William is listed with the surname WILSON and was born in Rathen, Aberdeenshire. The other 4 children were born in Longside.
In 1881 the family lived at Mains of Park, Lonmay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[4] James worked as a Agricultural Labourer. The household has 4 children: Margaret (age 16), Isabella (12), John (8) and Jane (6). John was born in Rathen, Aberdeenshire and Jane was born in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. All 4 children were at school.
In 1891 the family lived at Claystyles, Rathen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[5] James was still working as a Farm Servant. His daughter Margaret was working as a General Servant (Domestic) and his daughter Lizzie was a Scholar. Two boarders present are Isabella BRUCE (age 8) and James BRUCE (3). Two Grandsons are also present: James J RETTIE (4) and David RETTIE (4).
In 1901 the family lived at Nether Kinmundy (Seafield), Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[6] James is working as a Crofter & Agricultural Labourer. As well as his wife Jane, his daughter Lizzie is present and working as a Crofter's Daughter. Lizzie is listed as Single. There are 3 Grandchildren present: Charlotte CARLE (age 8), Ida BRUCE (6) and Catherine RETTIE (0). Charlotte and Catherine were born in Longside, Ida was born in Rathen.
In 1911 James lived at Nether Kinmundy Crofts, Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[7] James is listed as a Widower and working as a Crofter. His daughters Bella and Lizzie are present. Bella is working as a Housekeeper and Lizzie as a Domestic Servant. Both are listed as Single. There are 6 Grandchildren present: Ida BRUCE (age 16), Katie KEIR (10), Mabel WILSON (5), Wilson RETTIE (3), James DONALD (3) and Beatrice DONALD (0). Ida was born in Rathen, Mabel was born in Crathie and Beatrice was born in Blackhills. All the other Grandchildren were born in Longside.
When he was 72 years old, James died on 11 Nov 1911 at Seafield Croft, Kinmundy in the district of Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[8] His occupation was given as Crofter and the cause of death was Pneumonia Pleurisy. The informant was his daughter Bella RETTIE.
