Biography

John RETTIE was born in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland on 19 May 1896.[1] He was the first child of John Rettie and Janet Wallace. His only brother was Adam RETTIE (2 Nov 1898).

When he was 2 years old, his father John RETTIE died on 16 Jul 1898.

In 1911 he worked as an Apprentice Engineer, Motor Garage in Hoddom, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[2] He was listed as Step Son (14) along with his brother Adam (12) in the household of James CARRUTHERS. Evidently their mother Janet had re-married and had had 4 children with James CARRUTHERS: Esther (8), Sarah (5), Lily (2) and James (3 months).

During the First World War, he served as a Private in the 6th Battalion The King's Own Scottish Borderers. His service number was 25861.[3]

On 3 May 1917, he died in Arras, France when he was 20 years old.[4][5]
