Biography

William RETTIE was born in Abt 1847 in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[1][2][3][4] He was the son of Charles RETTIE and Barbara SIMPSON.[1]

In 1861, he worked as a Farm Servant in the household of John GALL at Upper Hythie in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[5] His age was given as 14 years old.[5]

In 1871, he worked as a Farm Servant in the household of the Reverend John Forbes Mitchell COCK at the manse in the parish of Rathen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[6] His age was given as 25 years old.[6] Also present in the household was Elizabeth WATSON, Housemaid, age 21.[6]

On 20 Jun 1872, he married Elizabeth WATSON in Crimond, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[1] He was 25 years old and worked as a Farm Servant in Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland when he married Elizabeth, who was 23 years old at that time. He had seven children with Elizabeth: Jane, Ann, William, Elizabeth, Alexander, Joseph and Robert.

In 1880, he worked as a Traveller (Photography) and lived at 32, Summer Street in Aberdeen, Scotland.[7]

In 1881, he worked as a Chief Porter (Grocers) living at 32, Summer Street in Aberdeen, Scotland.[8]

In 1885 he worked as a Warehouseman and Grocer in Aberdeen, Scotland.[9]

In 1891, he worked as a Grocers Warehouseman living at Northfield Place in Aberdeen, Scotland.[2] He was 44 years old at that point.

In 1901, he was described as a Lodger Keeper living at 15, Miller Street in Aberdeen, Scotland.[3] He was 54 years old at that point.

In 1911, he worked as a Time Keeper at an Oil Cake Manufactury living with his wife Elizabeth at 8, Esslemont Avenue in Aberdeen, Scotland.[4] William's age was given as 66 years old.[4] The couple had been married for 39 years and had had 7 children, of whom 6 were still living.[4]
