Biography

Jane Reynolds was the 12th Child of Richard Reynolds, a 3rd Fleeter who arrived in the Colony in 1791 per:"Atlantic" and Sarah Elizabeth Stirling.

In 1841 she married John (Connor) O'Connor (not registered as O'Conner). ^[1]

Jane and John O'Connor were proprietors of an inn called " The Australian Arms", located on the Mudgee road at Tunnabutta. In 1854 the inn was in the name of John O'Connor, however by late 1855 in the name of Jane O'Connor. At this time her husband was seriously ill and on 13th August 1856 died in Sydney of Phthisis (pulmonary tuberculosis or a similar progressive wasting disease) leaving Jane a widow with 4 children:

1. John Zephrym O'Connor (last name at birth registered as Connor then 14
2. Jane Veronica O'Connor then 10
3. Teresa O'Connor then 7, and
4. Clara Maria O'Connor then 4.

In 1857 Jane married widower Henry Hammond. Jane seems to have adopted Monica as her middle name following marriage to Henry Hammond in the Roman Catholic faith and she also married under her maiden name, not that of her first marriage to John O'Connor. ^[2]

In the following years Jane and Henry appear to have become parents to two more children, although whether they were born to them or adopted is unclear as birth records in these name cannot be located:

1. Edith Mary Hammond born around 1859
2. Henry Gregory Hammond born around 1861

Jane died at Bega in 1865.^[3] She was buried at Eden.^[4]
