Biography

John Houston Richards was born on the 17th of December in the year 1838 in La Follette, Campbell County, TN. He was the son of Daniel Richardson and Sarah Elizabeth Wilhoit/Wilhite . John married 3 times and can be confirmed by a Family Bible (which no longer exists), but transcribed birth dates along deaths and marriages have come from other family members such as his youngest daughter, Sarah Coredlia Richardson, who wrote down these birth and death dates for her son Clyde Gross and was given to my husband his son. Also the Brock Family Bible, which was also translated had many of the same dates that Sarah had written down for her son Clyde. John's Civil War Pension file mentions his three wives, which he collected on before his death in 1925. John fought as a Union Soldier and was captured by the other side becoming a prisoner of war, but he was able to escape before ending up at the Andersonville Prison of War Camp where many young men and male family members died because of the ill treatment of Union Soldier Prisoners. Of course the Southern Prisoners were treated just as badly, when captured by the North. John's Three wives were:

2. Manervia Wilson, younger sister of Minerva, marriage date: 6 March 1875, death date: 31 March 1875
3. Susan Gaylor, birth date: 25 Feb 1855, marriage Date: 3 June 1875. death date: 16 Nov. 1928

John had total of 18 children according to the family bible. Nine children by his 1st Wife Nancy Wilson and 9 children by his 3rd Wife Susan Gaylor. Although, George Washington Richardson may have been the son of Minerva Wilson by a husband who abandoned her or by Susan Gaylor who got pregnant by a boy friend who had promised to marry her, but ran away instead. Both of these are family stories, told by different family members, one being the grandson of Susan Gaylor and John.

We know for Campbell Co., TN marriage records there was a Claiborn Wilson that married a Minerva Wilson on the 20th of January 1870 and this Claiborn does seem to disappear from Campbell County TN and has not been found by the 1880 U.S. Federal State Census. According to the family story by Edmond Agee Richardson, Jr., Susan Gaylor's boyfirend was also a "Wilson". So, Somewhere there is truth to this story and George Washington Richardson may be found NOT be a Richardson by YDNA.

Both stories by other's in the family, say that John Houston Richardson adopted George, after he married Sarah Gaylor. George Washington Richardson's Death Certificate says that his parents were unknown, which would make sense, especially, if his mother was Minerva Wilson, because she died within a month of marrying John Houston Richardson, after drinking contaminated Well Water and of course the father had ran away. So, George would not have known either of them and as we look into YDNA and Autosomal DNA for George Washington Richardson, his mother may have been Minerva Wilson, sister of Nancy Wilson or Susan Gaylor, while his father and YDNA may be found to have been a "Wilson".

(George Washington Richardson) Son of either Minerva Wilson or Susan Gaylor His YDNA is most likely "Wilson" rather than "Richardson" Autosomal DNA Could either be Wilson or Gaylor, depending on which mother.

John Houston Richardson passed away in on the 26th of June 1925 in Campbell County, TN. It was agreed upon the death of John that the farm would go to his youngest daughter, Sarah Cordelia Richardson and her husband, Harlie Dennie Gross for taking care of both he and Sarah's mother Susan Gaylor. I wish I could say that the farm remained in family hand's but Harlie sold the property to buy into some mining scheme, which never panned out.

Note by Cathi L. Gross this Date is the same date that is in the Sarah Cordelia Richardson Gross Bible. The 6th day of March 1875. . . So, this must be the Court house record that they could not find during the Civil War Pension file Court hearings for Pension, where it is mentioned that John Houston married 3 times.
According to Family Stories about Minerva Wilson, she was the younger sister of Nancy Wilson, John Houston's 1st wife. But a couple of months into the marriage she died from drinking bad well water. John Houston Richardson quickly remarried, because he had young children and a nursing child left from his 1st wife Nancy.

Richardson the Pension above described, who being duly sworn deposeth as follows: - According to my information and belief I was born on the 17th day of December 1838, as shown in Bible record of my Father's family bible, which is here provided and shown to the officer writing this affidavit, although the Bible was published in the year 1844. During the years 1850 and 1860 I resided in Campbell County Tennessee, in the same neighborhood where I now reside and have always resided,
my Father's name was Daniel Richardson, and
my Mother's name was Sarah E. Richardson, both dead long time.
My Post Office address is: Jacksboro, R.F.D. No. 3, Campbell County, Tennessee

Sworn and subscribed to before me by above names pension whom I certify to be worthy of full faith and credit. Said pension produced to me the Family Bible Stated above which was published in the year 1844 in which his birth appears written as stated by him, and the record appears to be genuine and without error or alteration and the writing has the appearance of being done many years ago, and I believe the record to be genuine. I am no kin to pension and have not interested in his claim. Given under my hand and seal of Chancery Court of Campbell County, Tenn. at office in Jacksboro, Tenn. this January 26, 1914.
