John was born in 1819, the son of William and Peggy (Alexander) Robertson, in Kentucky. He would eventually move to Illinois where he met and in 1844 married Caroline Elizabeth Tetrick, the daughter of Abraham and Anna (Huffman) Tetrick. They had the following children:

John served in the Civil War with the Union Army, 1st Regiment Illinois Artillery Company Batteries K & E as a wagoner.
Caroline would pass away at only 41 years of age in 1865, leaving John with several small children to care for and raise. He would only live a year later, passing away in 1866 at 46 years of age. John and Caroline's bodies are both buried in the Ridge Cemetery in Lakewood, Shelby County, Illinois.
