Biography

Janet (Rodger) Noble was born in Scotland.

Janet was born on 26 January 1823 in Abbey, Renfrewshire. She was the daughter of James Rodger - a tailor - and Agnes Orr.^[1]

In 1841, at the age of 17, she was living with her parents James and Agnes on High Street, Johnstone in the Abbey (Paisley) district of Renfrewshire. She is listed as being 15 on the census record. Also in the home with her were her brothers Robert, John, Patrick and George and Jean Gemmell.^[2]

In 1851, at age 27, she was still living with her parents on High Street, Johnstone. Her brothers Patrick and George are also listed on the census, as well as her niece and nephews John, Cath and William.^[3]

She married William Noble, an Irishman, on 4 February 1854 in Abbey.^[4]According to a second marriage record, both Janet and William lived in Nitshill at the time, and William worked as a Joiner.^[5]

In 1861, when she was 36, Janet was living in a 2 roomed house in the Peocklands Houses on High Street in Johnstone with her husband William and her children James (5), Jessie (3) and Agnes (1). Also in the home was William's 16 year old brother, Robert.^[15]

In 1871, when she was 46, Janet and William are again recorded as living in Peockland, Johnstone. Their children James (15), Jessie (13) and Mary (9) are living with them. Janet is noted as being a Mill Worker at this time.^[16]

Her husband William had passed away by the time the 1881 census was taken, so Janet, aged 56, is listed as a widow, still living in Peock Land. Living with her are her children James (25), Janet (23) and Mary (19) as well as John McDonald (55), a widower from Kilmarnock, Aryshire. Her occupation is listed as Housewife.^[17]

Janet died in 1884, aged 61, in Johnstone.^[18]

Research Notes

Her first child, James, was born out of wedlock. A paternity decree was lodged in the Paisley Court on 17 December 1853 by Janet Rodger, Eating House Keeper of High Street, Johnstone, Paisley, Renfrewshire. The defendant was William Noble, a boilermaker of Johnstone. The child was male and born on 21 Oct 1853.^[6]
