Biography

Sarah Ann Rogers was born in 1838 or 1839 in Indiana. In the 1870 census, she was living alone, without her children, who were each living with separate families, and was without her her husband. Ruth’s parents were born in the United States. Ruth married John S. Perry 16 Mar 1856 in Marion County, Iowa^[1] Two children are shown in the 1860 census.

1860 census:

• Sarah, age 22 (c 1838), born in Indiana
• Calvin, age 3, (c 1857), born in Iowa
• Ruth, 2 months (c1860), shown in image only.

The Census shows John as a farmer, with real estate worth $600 and a personal estate worth $100.^[2]

In 1870, the year of John's death, the Census shows his daughter Ruth living with some Perry relatives (Timothy Ridlen family) and his son Calvin with the Elijah Cozad family. Sarah’s husband seems to have died at sea in 1770. A John Perry died at sea on a ship sailing from Massachusetts. Usually when a husband died, the widow and her children moved in with parents or a sibling. Why didn't Sarah? Or was there a relative in Shopshire, England? Was she unable to care for her children, who were born in 1856 and 1859?

Sarah Ann Rogers Perry died in Madeley, Shropshire, England in 1880, according to the grandson of Earl Van Benthuysen. What connection did she, or possibly both of them, have to England? There is a listing for the death of a Sarah Perry, age 42, in the last quarter of 1880 in Madeley, Shropshire, England.^[3]

Edith McIntosh Hall (1907-2009) did extensive family research and tried to get information about the Rogers in the early 1950s, but no one wanted to talk about them. She got the feeling the family was separated. I don't know if she knew Sarah's daughter Ruth had a brother. I was a child at the time, but I would venture to guess that some of our Rogers family lived in Mahaska or Marion County, Iowa.^[4]
