Biography

Hugh was born in 1868. He was the son of John Ross and Jane Robson. He passed away in 1940.^[1]

Hugh's wife was Susan Vera Lenora Jane (aka Jean) Schaefer^[2]They had one daughter and his wife predeceased him by 21 years.^[3]

1. ↑ Jan Howe, a Ross family researcher has provided a transcription of Hugh's obituary which appeared in the Seaforth newspaper in April of 1940. "Dr. Hugh H. Ross, for many years one of the most prominent physicians and widely known residents of Seaforth and district, died suddenly at his home on Victoria Street Monday April 8th. Dr. Ross had been in poor health for over a year and had been confined to his home since November last. Born on the London Road near Brucefield, 73 years ago, he was a son of the late John Ross, one of the original pioneers of Stanley Township who took up his land from the Crown, when this district was known only as the Huron Tract. He received his early education in the Stanley school and after at the Seaforth Collegiate Institute before entering Trinity Medical School, Toronto, where he graduated as a physician and surgeon. Twice in later years he wet to the Old Country where he took post graduate courses in London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. After spending a few years in Auburn he purchased the practice of the late Dr. Bethune in Seaforth, and for many years had enjoyed a large and successful practice. Dr. Ross was one of the oldest and most prominent members of First Presbyterian Church of which he was always a liberal supporter. In politics he was a strong Liberal and was a past Master of Britannia Masonic Lodge; as Past Principal of Malloch Chapter, and a charter member of the Seaforth Lions Club. Until recent years he was also an active member of the Seaforth Curling and Lawn Bowling Clubs, but his greatest hobby and one which employed many pleasant hours of his leisure time was his light harness and race horses, of which he always owned several. He is survived by an only daughter Mrs. John A. Gorwill, and a little grandson, Hugh Gorwill of Seaforth. He is also survived by one brother, Mr. Alexander Ross of Seaforth, and one sister, Mrs. E. McEwen of Winnipeg. A private funeral was held from his late residence on Wednesday afternoon when the service was conduced by his minister, Rev. Hugh Jack, assisted by Rev. E.F. Chandler of Kippen. Interment was made in Maitlandbank Cemetery, McMillan, J.E. Keating and James MacDonald. "
