Biography

Elizabeth (Rowbotham) Gant was born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England.

Elizabeth Rowbottam was born in 1843, at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England, the eldest child of John Rowbotham and Hannah Ward, her birth being registered in the 3rd Quarter at Horncastle.^[1] Elizabeth was baptised on the 24th July 1844, at Horncastle.^[2]

On the 30th March 1851 7-year-old Elizabeth, a scholar, was living at her paternal grandfather's home at St Lawrence Lane, Horncastle. Others present at the time were her father, John, a Master nail maker (listed as unmarried, although he had been so since 1842), mother, Hannah, grandfather, Amos Rowbotham (64, a cutler Master (but not the Master Cutler)), paternal aunts: Mary (28, a dress maker), and Martha (18, a servant), her brothers: William (5, a scholar), and Henry (2), and her baby sister, Lucy.^[3]

Elizabeth married William Gant on the 25th March 1866, in High Toynton, Lincolnshire, the marriage being registered in the1st Quarter at Horncastle.^[4] Notices were published in the Lincolnshire Chronicle on the 30th,^[5] and the 31st.^[6] (An interesting note is that Elizabeth's great-grandmother, on her father's side, was an Elizabeth Gant.)
Elizabeth and William had nine known children, four daughters, and five sons:

On the 2nd April 1871 27-year-old Elizabeth, 30-year-old William (an agricultural labourer), and their children: 4-year-old Sarah Ann, 3-year-old Henry, and 1-year-old Lucy, were living at Belchford, Lincolnshire.^[7]

Before the end of 1873, the family lost their eldest, when Henry died not even six years old.

On the 3rd April 1881 the family was now at Southwells Lane, Horncastle. William, now 40, was a railway platelayer. The eldest three children: Sarah Ann (14), Lucy (11), and George (9), were all scholars, while the younger three: Ada (6), Alice (4), and Rowland (1), were too young yet for school.^[8]
Also in 1881 their son Charles Daniel made his appearance – the last of their children to be born in England.

Elizabeth (Rowbotham) Gant migrated from Lincolnshire, England to Queensland, Australia.

In 1883, Elizabeth, William and their children packed up and emigrated, arriving in Brisbane, Queensland, on the 14th November, on the ship "Dorunda".

Sadly, their arrival in their new home was darkened somewhat when young Charles died in June 1885.
Then in January 1886, in Toowoomba where they had settled, the last of their brood made his appearance, being given the name William Cook.

Elizabeth Gant née Rowbotham passed away on the 23rd January 1924, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, in her 81st year.^[9]
