Biography

James Rowe Jr was born in 1777 in Chatham County, North Carolina to James Rowe Sr and his wife Elizabeth Tracey.

He married his wife Sophia Huffman in Botetourt County, Virginia on the 26th of June 1799, witnessed by her father John Huffman. ^[1]

In the early 1800s (probably the 1820s) his father James Sr and most of his adult siblings and their families all took the Wilderness Trail west through the Cumberland and Appalachian Mountains by way of the Cumberland Gap. They settled in eastern Kentucky in Pike and Morgan Counties.. The 1840 U.S. census has James residing in Pike County, Kentucky. His brother Stephen, nephews Johnathan, Joseph and Hiram Rowe, and sons in law Ehud and James May all live nearby enough to be on the same pages or a few pages away in the census log.^[2]

In the 1850 U.S. census he is listed as being 73 years old and living in Pike County with his wife Sophia. Their children have all married and moved out. A 60 year old woman named Katherine Cooley lives with them. His nephew Jonathan Rowe (the son of his brother Solomon Rowe), and wife Elizabeth Fry, live nearby with their children. His daughter Barbara and her husband Anthony Louks live next door with their children.^[3] By the 1860 U.S. census Sophia has died and James is listed at being 83 years old and living in the household of Jonathan.^[4]He dies a few years later himself on October 5, 1864, at about the age of 87, in Pike County, Kentucky. His gravesite location is currently unknown.

Genetic testing and YDNA

Tests results at FTDNA and 23&ME by multiple male line descendants of James Rowe Jr, as well as several male line descendants from the lines of his brothers Stephen and Joseph, have determined that James Rowes YDNA haplogroup was R-A195. This is part of a YDNA haplogroup known as "Irish Type 2" (haplogroup CTS4466),^[5] a lineage strongly associated with southern Ireland and the Uí Fidgenti in particular. (FTDNA Uí Fidhgeinte project). Research on this field of inquiry about the origins of the Rowe/Roe family is currently being coordinated at the FTDNA Rowe Surname Project.
