Biography

Internet mistakes about Samuel. He was not born 1 Nov 1644-that is his wife's birthday. He was not born in Marat, New Milford, CT nor Marat, Tolland, CT or New London. Marat in Connecticut does not exist, and his parents weren't in New London (settled 1646) until about 1657.

Samuel Royce, son of Robert

Samuel Royce [1] [2] [3] was the son of the immigrant, Robert Royce and his wife Mary.[2][1] His parents lived in Stratford, Connecticut, by 1648.[1]

He was born about 1640, give or take a couple of years. His age has been estimated from the following: Sister Sarah b. c. 1634, brother Nehemiah b. c. 1636. Nehemiah was given land by his father in 1662 (age 26). Samuel and Nathaniel were given land by their father in 1664,[1] when they were at least age 21 but probably younger than 26 (born 1638-1643). Averaging two years between siblings: Births: Sarah 1634, Nehemiah 1636, Jonathan 1638, Samuel 1640, Nathaniel 1642, etc.

About 1657, the family moved from Stratford, to New London, Connecticut.[1]

Samuel and his brother Nathaniel witnessed a deed 7 Jan 1662, in which their father gave their brother Nehemiah land.[4]

In 1663, Robert petitioned the town of New London for a grant of land to settle sons Samuel and Nathaniel.[3] and 10 Aug 1664, Robert gave Samuel and Nathaniel his mountain farm lying west of Alewife Brook, which he bought from Weaver Smith. On the same day Robert gave to his three sons, his “six acre house lot which was given me by the town, together with part of my land lying without my fence which I bought of John Stebbins, belonging to my pasture and joining to part of said six acre lot.[5][3]

First Marriage: Samuel Royce married first Hannah d. of Josiah Churchill of Wethersfield on Jan. 9, [1666], in New London, Connecticut.[6] Hannah was the daughter of Josiah & Elizabeth (Foote) Churchill, b 1 Nov 1644 in Wethersfield. [2] They had seven children.[2]

Samuel became a freeman in New London in 1669.[7]

Wallingford was founded 1670 and Samuel's brother Nathaniel and father Robert were original proprietors.[8] It doesn't appear that Robert actually lived there but bought land to accommodate his sons Nehemiah, Samuel, Nathaniel, and Isaac who relocated to Wallingford.[3]

1673 Samuel and his brother Nathaniel were paid a bounty by New London for killing 5 wolves each.[3] The relocation to Wallingford took place between the birth of son Samuel in 1673 and daughter Abigail in 1677.

Second Marriage: "Samll Royce m Sarah Bauldin june 5 1690 by Capt. Barnes," in Wallingford [9] Sarah was the daughter of John & Mary (Bruen) Baldwin, b 25 Sep 1655, in Milford, d 11 Jan 1729, in Wallingford[2]

There are some items being accredited to Samuel, but that probably were items in his son Samuel's life. Samuel was about 70 at this time and had not been publicly active in civic life.

  • The General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut confirmed Mr. Samuel Royce as Ensign in the Wallingford Trainband, October 1709.[10] He may have been an ensign before this date.
  • In May and Aug, 1710, Mr. John Hall and Mr. Samuel Royce were Representatives (Deputies) from Wallingford to the General Assembly.[10]

After Samuel's death, at the Oct 1712 session of the General Assembly, they once again confirmed officers of the Wallingford Trainband, Mr. Samuel Royce Lieutenant.[10]

Death An administrators bond was given to wife Sarah and son Robert on 24 Dec 1711, at Wallingford.[11]

Samuel Royce was buried in the old Meriden Cemetery.[12][13]

Robert Royce got the land in 1663 to settle his two sons, Samuel and Nathaniel. Samuel would have been 15 years old at the time and Nathaniel would have been 23. You have a source that says Samuel owned the land in 1664 so that would mean he was 16 years old. Since Robert got the land to start with he somehow transferred it to the boys by the time Samuel is 16, like he gave land to Nehemiah . Samuel doesn't marry for two more years so he would be 18. I still think that is very possible. I do think without any proof, I wouldn't just guess he was a twin since Robert may have been thinking now is the time to get the land as maybe later it won't be available. It kept the family together and made it easier to help build housing etc. I think men could own land young, just women couldn't.

I think RFinA has overlooked the fact that Samuel owned land in 1664, so would have been born before 1643. Between Jonathan in 1638 and Ruth in 1645, there is plenty of room for two children Nathaniel and Samuel. Because they are listed as Samuel and Nathaniel in the records, I sort of think Samuel is the elder but Nathaniel could be. It actually crossed my mind they might be twins. It's not likely that Isaac was b. in 1650 either since he married in 1669 (he would only be 19) 1648 would make him 21. I think instead. Sarah c 1634, Nehemiah c. 1636, Jonathan c 1638, Nathaniel and Samuel or Samuel and Nathaniel 1640 & 1642, Ruth 1645, Isaac 1648 and dtr c 1650.

I have concerns about Jonathan's birth in 1638 since he m. about 1656, but I'm not worried about him.

Royce family in America has Samuel born ca. 1648.

It has Robert moving to Stratford Ct. before 1648 where he first is listed on lot 74. In 1657 Robert gets a lot on Post Hill in New London, CT. He later in 1663 gets land to settle his two sons Samuel and Nathaniel.

Nathaniel is listed as born ca. 1640 so unlikely that Samuel would be born that year. It lists Sarah ca. 1634, Nehemiah ca. 1635, Jonathan ca. 1638, Nathaniel ca. 1640, Ruth baptised Dec. 7, 1635, Samuel ca. 1648, Isaac ca. 1650.

I don't know where the notion that he was born 1648 came from. I didn't find it during my researches. I think it was at least five years earlier because he owned land in 1664 and that we should change it to about 1640. Objections?

Sending Jeannie Q a message also.

There is no proof that Samuel's mother's surname is Simms.
