Biography

Alice was born in the 1760's and married Robert Cardwell probably during the 1780's (no record exists).

Alice and Robert's youngest child, Thomas Dixon Cardwell remained with them - not marrying until after they had passed away. In 1830 Thomas (aged 20-30) is listed as head of household, and Robert is the eldest male aged 80-90, while Alice is the female aged 60-70.[1] Robert's will left everything to his wife Alice (for life), then to his son Thomas, acknowledging his care for them in their latter years. Alice died between when her husband's will was written (November 8, 1833) and recorded (April 11, 1842), as there's no further mention of her. She didn't apply for a widow's pension, so she could have passed away before her husband.[2]

Research Notes

Alice's last name at birth is contested. She is not mentioned in the will of Anthony Rucker[3] nor is she mentioned among his children (including deceased ones) in a chancery suit concluded in 1847.[4] The names Rucker and Dixon are assumed from the names of her children. Based on frequency alone it seems more likely that her last name was Dixon.

I think that Anthony Rucker, after whom Robert and Alice named one of their sons, might have been locally renowned. He and his brother, Benjamin Rucker sailed the first batteau on the James River http://www.theruckerfamilysociety.org/batteau.html. Later these were commonly used to transport goods up and down the James River to Richmond until the canal was completed to Lynchburg in 1841.

Brett,

My Cardwell cousin is now showing the following number of ThruLines matches with the lines of Anthony Rucker's siblings: Lucy Mildred (20), Ambrose (11), Isaac (4), Benjamin (3), Mildred (3), Ephraim (2), John F. (2). Similarly, he shows the following number of matches with the lines of the siblings of Anthony's wife Rebecca Burgess: Mary (10), Thomas Henry (5), Nancy (3), Elizabeth (3), Timothy (2), William T. (2).

It's easy to dismiss this as incidental, but the number of matches he is showing from the grandparents of Anthony Rucker are among the highest shown for any of his 5th-great-grandparents at 70 for Rucker and 50 for Burgess. Most others in his list show numbers more in the range of 5-15 matches... This isn't enough information for a conclusion, but it sure appears that Anthony Rucker was a 4th-great-grandparent.

That is remarkable, given that that many generations back the probability of matching a documented cousin drops to around 10% or less. I'm still hoping for an mtDNA match to at least support a likely couple as Alice's parents.

Rucker-1275 and Unknown-304894 appear to represent the same person because: This is a duplicate. She is not a child of Anthony Rucker, was not in his will and was not in the distribution of his estate.

Hi Chris. The Dixon family was all over the area that is now Campbell County before Alice got there, and family tradition is that the Cardwells were closely related with the Dixons before Robert came to Virginia. The Dixons there were said to be his cousins, but again, no proof...

There were no Ruckers at in the area that is now Campbell County before about 1816, when they started moving to the exact area where Robert & Alice's children lived. Not just close, but on the same land in some cases...

A year or two ago, I started looking at autosomal DNA matches for Dixons and Ruckers, but Robert & Alice are my 5th-great grandparents, so what I found is inconclusive on either front (I have too many matches with both names to sort them all), so I contacted one of my close matches who is two generations closer, and used Ancestry's ThruLines as a quick-and-dirty way to check his matches, and found that at his 5th-great-grandparent level, he shows 15 matches with Mildred Rucker, 5 with Ambrose, 1 each with John, Isaac, Benjamin & Sarah, plus 16 with Anthony (which I am ignoring for now). He also shows 2 matches with Thomas Henry Burgess, 3 with Mary Burgess, 1 with William T. Burgess, 4 with Nancy Ann Burgess, plus 16 with Rebecca (also ignoring for now).

Would you happen to know anyone else who is closer in generations to these folks that we could compare matches with?
