William was the patriarch of the North Carolina Ruffin family. It is believed that he moved with his family and new wife, Sarah, to Bertie County, then a precinct in Albarmarle County, around 1726.
His first wife (Faith Gray) died in Surry County around 1720, while their sons were still young. Their father remarried and they moved to Bertie County 6 years later, in 1726. His second wife (Sarah Crawford Newsom) had a son, Joel Newsom, that came with his mother at that time.
There is no will available for William, but there is an Inventory of his Estate filed in "loose estate papers" of Bertie Co at the NC State Archives. Based on the date of the inventory (Feb 10, 1739), it appears that he died in late fall, 1738. Sons William and Robert were named the executors of the estate.
Note: Boddie states, "In the N.C. Historical Commission at Raleigh, N.C., there is filed the inventory of the estate of "William Ruffin, late of Bertie County decd. Feb. 10, 1738/9" (showing 11 Negroes, 78 head of cattle, 61 head of hogs, 11 sheep, etc.) The executors were his sons, William and Robert Ruffin."
