Lt. Col. William Russell (CA. 1699-1757), A Critical Examination; George ely russell, C.G.; excerpt from The Virginia Genealogist 1978: Page 83-84: ...Des Cognets' major contribution was the finding that William Russell, previously assumed to have been the first of his family in America, was preceded by an uncle Peter Russell of St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County, as early as 1697. Typically, however, des Cognets did not consider or explore the possibility that this Peter might have been identical with the indentured servant of this name transported into Virginia, for whom Robert Symmons claimed a head right in 1682 [Virginia Land Patents, v. 7, p. 151; v. 8, pp. 131, 150]. Convinced of his descent from a first family of Virginia, des Cognets could not accept a comparatively late arriving servant as any relation to his ancestor. Another example of his failure to follow up obvious clues was des Cognets' passing over or ignoring the very close early association between the Russell family and Governor Alexander Spotswood and the tradition that William was an employee of Spotswood. Never able to prove the identity of William's father, des Cognets completely overlooked the fact that the Russells were tenants of Spotswood.

On 14 June 1735 Alexander Spotswood, Esq., leased property in Orange County to Thomas Russell, planter, the lease to last for the lives of Thomas's sons William and Thomas Jr. [Orange Co., Va., Deed Book 1, pp. 87-91]. The only William available in Orange County at that time was des Cognets' ancestor, known by him to have occupied land adjoining Spotswood and to have been employed by Spotswood to conduct some official business in Philadelphia in 1730.

Note

Note: I think Thomas Russell died between September 28, 1749 and July 26, 1750 based upon road Orders of Orange County, Virginia. On June 15, 1735, Alexander Spotswood leased to Thomas Russell, planter, 100 acres on the south side of the Rapidan River which would be in present day Orange County, VA, I think. This land was part of Spotswood's 40,000 acre land grant in the area. The lease was for the lives of Thomas' sons, William and Thomas. This kind of lease is unusual to say the least. The rent for the first four years was one ear of Indian corn and after that 600 pounds of tobacco per year from December 25, 1738. In addition Thomas agreed to plant 300 fruit trees including at least 100 good apple trees and enclose same with a sufficient fence. Thomas would assist with 10 days work of one hand for making the water dam or race of any grist mill upon the Spotsylvania Tract. If at any time any grist mill on Spotswood's Spotsylvania Tract shall be broken down, Thomas would assist with one laboring hand for five days work in one year in repairing same. Spotswood and his servants and workmen could enter into all of the premises (houses and orchards excepted) to dig, search or drain for any mines of stone, iron, lead, copper and have ingress, egress and regress for carrying the same away with carts, waggons, carriages, horses, and oxen. One year of the four rent free years was past before June 14, 1735, the said Thomas Russell having been so long settled on the premises.

This connection still remains in spite of my previous post. It can create a great number of problems with the lineage.

Thomas Russell and the marriage data for Sarah Irwin should not be on this page. Sarah Irwin has been incorrectly merged with Sarah (Maiden Name Unknown) and her husband Unknown Russell. The children on this page do not belong to Sarah (Maiden Name Unknown) This needs to be carefully studied and fixed. I did a bit of research on the Thomas Russell line the husband of the Sarah Irwin who was merged with Sarah (Maiden Name Unknown). I found the following information that was donated to the Allen County Public Library. It had reasonable data on the Thomas Russell family and descendants. [1] Thank-You, Judith
