Biography

Joseph Matthias Sanders, the son of Matthias Sanders (abt.1773-1813) and Elizabeth (McLaney) Sanders (abt.1780-1834), was born on March 13, 1812 in Thornhill, York, Upper Canada (Ontario).[1] He married Charlotte Wilcox on June 26, 1833.[2] In 1871, Joseph, Charlotte and their family were living in Middleton Township, Norfolk County, Ontario.[3] By 1881, Charlotte had died; and Joseph was now married to Nancy T. Sanders (born ca. 1829 in Upper Canada) and farming in Dereham in Oxford South.[4] By the time of his death in Norwich, Oxford County, on Oct. 28, 1881,[1] Joseph had acquired a great deal of property in the Tillsonburg area and was an active and respected member of the community. He is buried in Tillsonburg Pioneer Cemetery.[5]
