Oliver was born to David and Rachel (Strong) Sanford on 24 May 1744, apparently in Milford, [1] although his birth was not recorded in the town records nor was his baptism recorded in the church there.
Soldier of the Revolution
Oliver served in the Connecticut Militia during the Revolution. In April 1777; during the British raid on Danbury, which began with a landing on Compo Beach, he was one of the 42 "minutemen" captured and carried to New York.[2]
Marriage
Oliver married Phebe Newton, daughter of Jonah and Phebe (Platt) Newton[1] about 1764, judging from their birth dates and dthe birth of their first child, presumably in Milford, home town for both of them.
Oliver and Phebe may have begun their life together in Milford, but by 1771 they were members of the church in Woodbury[3] and had presumably resettled in that town. Oliver operated a tannery there.[1]
After the Revolution, Oliver and family removed from Connecticut to Poultney, Vermont. Oliver was reported living there in the first three Federal censuses in 1790, 1800, and 1810[4]
Death
Oliver died December 18, 1817, in Poultney, Vermont[5]
Children
Oliver and Phebe Sanford had thirteen children, first three presumably born in Milford but not recorded there and later baptized in Woodbury, next four presumably born in Woodbury shortly before they were baptized there,[3] and last five presumably born in Poultney[1]
