Biography

Abigail Sawin was born on January 24, 1724/5 in Sherborn, Massachusetts to John Sawin and Joanna Lyon [1][2].

Abigail married John Bacon on 29 May 1744, in Natick, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[3][4] They had registered their intentions on 7 December 1743, in Natick[5].

  7. David Bacon, b. Oct. 31, 1761.
  8. Hezekiah Bacon, b. Feb. 8, 1764.
  9. Rebecca Bacon, b. July 11, 1766.
  10. Hannah Bacon, b. April 22, 1769.


John Bacon served in the French war in Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia between 1745 and 1748. He was a prominent citizen of Needham, serving as selectman and assessor in 1771.

John Bacon and six of his sons served in the Revolutionary War. In April 1775 John Bacon was a lieutenant in Captain Caleb Kingsbury's Minute Men Company in the Needham Leg (North Natick) area and what later became the town of Wellesley. He was killed during the British retreat from Concord on the first day of the American Revolution, April 19, 1775, one of fifty Americans either killed or mortally wounded on that day. The widow Abigail Bacon married Lt. Timothy Smith, widower of Esther (Dewing), on 18 April 1780, in Natick[14]. Timothy Smith died on 1 July 1803, and Abigail died on 25 November 1810[3]. Abigail has a Find A Grave: Memorial #6063144
