Biography

Robert was the son of Robert de Scales and Egeline de Courtenay. He was said to be age 13 in 1325, pointing to a birth date of about 1312.[1][2][3][4]

Robert was his father's main heir, and inherited lands in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and elsewhere.[1][2] He was granted seisin of his father's lands in 1332 even though he was not of full age.[3][5] In July 1333, an order was made for him to receive the dower lands of his paternal grandmother Isabella Burnell.[6]

Robert married Katherine Ufford[3][4] before 2 April 1335.[1][2] They had three children:

Robert fought in France during the first decades of the Hundred Years' War. In 1342-3 he was ordered to supply 40 men of war and ten archers for service in Brittany, with a strong indication that he should accompany them.[7] He took part in the Battle of Crécy in 1346[1][2][3] and is recorded in 1347 as a banneret at Calais the next year.[1][2] In 1356-7 he was given letters of protection as he was to be part of the escort for the Prince of Wales when he went to Gascony.[7]

Robert Lord Scales fought at the battle of Crécy, Ponthieu, on 26 August, 1346. He was a Banneret in the first division which was under the nominal command of Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, then sixteen years old.[8]

Robert was third Lord Scales.[1][2][3] He was summoned to Parliament from 1341/2 to 1369.[1][2]

Robert died on 13 August 1369.[1][2][3][4]

Research Notes

Daughter Margaret's Marriages

In Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry, Douglas Richardson says that Margaret, daughter of Robert de Scales and Katherine de Ufford, married first Thomas Howard and secondly Walter de Bermingham.[1][2] Subsequent research has established that the marriages were the other way round - that her first husband was Walter de Bermingham. See the 2014 thread 'Margaret (or Margery) de Scales, wife of Walter de Bermingham, Knt. (died 1361) and Robert Howard, Knt. (died 1388)' in soc.genealogy.medieval, accessed 7 May 2021.[9]

Robert (Scales) de Scales is listed in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor Margaret Tyndal and Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. IV, pages 239-242 TYNDALL). The Magna Carta Project also identified this profile in a trail to Surety Saher de Quincy. Both trails were badged by the Project on 11 May 2021. See the Magna Carta Trails on John Tyndall's profile for a list of profiles in these trails and the development status of each profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

The Magna Carta Project has identified this profile in a trail between Gateway Ancestor Margaret (Tyndall) Winthrop and Surety Baron Robert de Vere. I will soon be adding the Magna Carta Project as co-manager of this profile, along with a project box and a project section (under the Acknowledgements heading). This profile needs further development against our Checklist and any help you could offer would be appreciated! Thanks!
