Biography

Volga German
Pauline (Schaffer) Meisner was a Volga German.

M. "Pauline" Schaffer[1] (Schaefer) was born on 31 Oct 1886 in Grimm, Volga, Russia to Fred Schaefer. Pauline is the name listed for her mother in her obituary. The mother listed in her death record is: Kristine Fritzler (see research notes).[2][3] Family records indicate that Pauline's mother Kristine or Christina Fritzler was a sister to Katheran nee Fritzler Leonhardt Strecker.

Pauline married Alexander Meisner on 6 Jul 1908, who was recently widowed with two small children, Frederick and Lydia. They most likely married in Grimm. Alex and Pauline had at least eight recorded children together.

Soon after their marriage, the family made their way to Scotland where they set sail for America, arriving in Oct 1908. The family immigrated to America via S.S. Columbia arriving at Ellis Island on 19 Oct 1908 where they were detained for five days due to requirement of doctor certification. They sailed with Alexander's parents Christian and Eva Katherina Meisner. The two families were bound for Fort Collins, Colorado to be with Jacob and Eva's other son Christian Jacob Meisner, Jr.

The Meisner families were farm laborers answering the call for Colorado German-Russian beet laborers. Meisner families can be found in census records together. In 1910, they lived in Buckingham Place in Fort Collins.

In October 1919, Alex and his family moved to Gering, Nebraska. He worked in the sugar factory and farmed in Gering, Nebraska.

Pauline Meisner passed away on 16 Dec 1952 in Gering, Nebraska. She is buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering, Nebraska.[4]

Research Notes

Printz-168 22:39, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

  • 1897 Grimm census searches:
    • One Paulina Schaefer, age 14 (1883) daughter of Karl Jacob Schaefer, age 53 (1844) with wife Anna Katharina age 51: Household #928, p.220 This record and family names do not match as well as they are listed residing in Brunnental, so can be ruled out.
    • Katarina Margareta Schaefer/Schäfer, age 11, daughter of daughter-in-law, Note: orphan, no family of her own in Household #499, p138 Daughter-in-law is a Katarina, age 39 (1858), who was the second wife to Jakob Kimpel, age 40, s/o Johann Heinrich Kimpel. This record matches the birth date and possibility that her mother Kristine Fritzler Schaefer was widowed and remarried. If there were siblings to Pauline, they are not listed in this record.

  • AHSGR Grimm VC, Henry Schmick's, Ahnentafel chart lists Frederich Schaeffer and Christina Fritzler as parents. Obituary lists Fred and Pauline Schaffer. Referred to as M. Pauline Schaffer in her daughter Leah Helzer's obit.

Julie Mangano's census research for possible parents:

  • 10-11 years old in 1897
  • daughter of Friedrich and Christine or Pauline Schaefer
  • Pauline is very rare in the Volga German colonies and I can't find it at all in the 1897 Grimm census
  • Family: #386 Head of the household: Friedrich Schaefer, age 46 Wife: Katharina Margaretha Schaefer, age 33 Daughter: Margaretha Schaefer, age 10 [Her full name would have been Margaretha Pauline Schaefer]
  • Family: #925 Head of the household: Johann Friedrich Schaefer, age 50 Wife: Eva Elisabeth Schaefer, age 52 Son: Johann Friedrich Schaefer, age 25 Daughter-in-law: Christina Margaretha Schaefer, age 26 No daughter with first name starting with C or P in this one, though, but maybe she was living with another family at the time of the census.
  • Family: 934 Head of the household: Johann Friedrich Schaefer, age 51 Wife: Maria Elisabeth Schaefer, age 46 Daughter: Maria Schaefer, age 11 [Her full name would have been Maria Pauline Schaefer]
  • Family: 936 Head of the household: Johann Jakob Schaefer, age 43 Wife: Katharina Elisabeth Schaefer, age 41 Brother: Johann Friedrich Schaefer, age 39, widower Brother's daughter: Natalia Schaefer, age 7 No daughter of brother Johann Friedrich with first name starting with C or P in this one, though, but maybe she was living with another family at the time of the census. He was the right age to have an 11-year-old daughter.
