Garret was born in 1743. He was the son of Gerrit Schenck and Jannetje Couwenhoven. He married to Sarah Couwenhoven, a daughter of "Rulif" Coewenhoven and Sarah Voorhees.
Garret served in the Monmouth Militia during the Revolution.[1] He lived and died in Pleasant Valley of Monmouth County, New Jersey. He passed away in 1797. His estate was administered by his widow Sarah, Garret Covenhoven, Jr. (son-in-law), and Garret Smock. His widow petitioned the Orphan's Court for guardianship of their daughter Sarah Schenck (b. 1786), a minor under the age of fourteen years, indicating his children were mostly grown. Several other children are identified by cemetery inscriptions below.
Inscriptions taken from headstones in the Schenck-Couwenhoven Cemetery, Pleasant Valley.
