Charles Nelson Schultz was born on May 7, 1869, in Brandon, Iowa, to William Shultz and Sarah Walker Shultz. He grew up in Brandon, Iowa then moved west possibly after his father died.
He married Minnie Jane Petty in 1888 in Charles Mix, South Dakota, where Minnie's family lived. Their first child, Emma was born in the southern part of the Dakota territory in 1889. The family moved depending on crops and jobs so the other 13 children were born in the Dakotas, Iowa, and Nebraska. Around 1910 the family seemed to settle in the Lincoln Nebraska area.
The family had a ranch in southern Colorado and spent time there. Ray Riggen remembers his father talking about spending summers at the ranch.
Charles' wife Minnie died in Denver, Colorado in 1921. Charles remained in Nebraska among his children until his death in 1934. Minnie and Charles are buried together in Fairview Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska,
