Biography

  • Ida Edna Julia Mae Schwedt was born on May 3rd 1899 [1] [2] [3] in Marilla, Erie, New York to Ernst Johann August Schwedt and Katherine E. Lamb (adp. From). Ida was the 4th of nine children, 4 boys and 5 girls, William (1895), Elizabeth (1896), Jennie (1898), Ida (1899), Rose (1902), Leonard (1904), Emma (1906), Ernest (1908), and Edwin (1911). Ida's father was born in Germany, her mom in New York in the United States.
  • The 1900 United States Federal Census [4] [5] [6] [7] we see two related families next door to each other in Marilla, Erie, New York. The first headed by Charles Doze, a farmer, whose daughter wed August Schwedt and the second headed Caroline From included daughters Jenny, Elizabeth "Lizzie" and Ida Schwedt. The three generations were living in a rental together. Ernst is shown as a step-son with the Dozes.
  • Ida's sister, Rose, is born on March 12th 1902 in Marilla, Erie, New York [8].
  • Ida's brother, Leonard, is born on July 24th 1904 in Marilla, Erie, New York [9].
  • The 1905 New York State Census [10] [11] shows 6 year old Ida living with her family consisting of her parents, herself, 3 sisters, a brother and her maternal (adoptive) grandmother, Kate From in Marilla, Erie, New York.
  • Ida's sister, Emma, is born on July 9th 1906 in Marilla, Erie, New York [12].
  • Ida's brother, Ernest, is born on August 25th 1908 in Marilla, Erie, New York [13].
  • In the 1910 United States Federal Census [14] [15] [16] [17] we find 11 year old Ida living in a family of 10 consisting of her parents, herself, 2 brothers, 4 sisters and her maternal adoptive grandmother in Marilla, Erie New York. Ernst is a (general) farmer and the family is living on a farm which they own.
  • Ida's brother, Edwin was born on August 10th 1911 in Porterville, Erie, New York [18].
  • Ida Edna Julia Mae Schwedt and Benjamin Ellsworth Rice were married on March 26th 1919 in East Aurora, Erie, New York [19]. Ben and Ida remained married until his death in 1969. Together they raised 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls, Willard "Bill" (1919), Harlan "Scout" (1921), Rolan "Flex" (1923), Bernard "Bernie" (1925), Robert "Bob" (1927), Clifford "Bobo" (1929), Betty (1933), Jane (1936) and twin Jean (1936). All of the boys served in the US military armed services starting either during or just after World War II.
  • Ida and Ben's first child, Willard "Bill", is born on October 11th 1919 in Wales, Erie, New York [20].
  • Ida's sister, Jennie, died on February 2nd 1920 in Buffalo, Erie, New York during a flu epidemic [21] [22].
  • The 1920 United States Federal [23] [24] [25] [26] Census shows a 20 year old Ida and her husband Ben living in Wales, Erie, New York with their first child Willard James Rice born the previous October. Ben is working as a farm laborer and Ida shows no occupation.
  • Ben and Ida's son, Harlan "Scout", is born on February 5th 1921 in Sheldon, Wyoming, New York [27].
  • Ben & Ida's son, Rolan "Flex," is born on July 20th 1923 in Sheldon, Wyoming, New York [28].
  • Ida and Ben's son, Bernard "Bernie" is born on May 17th 1925 in Sheldon, Wyoming, New York [29].
  • Ida and Ben's son, Robert, is born on February 9th 1927 in Bennington, Wyoming, New York [30].
  • Ida and Ben's son, Clifford "Bobo," is born on November 26th 1929 in Bennington, Wyoming, New York [31].
  • The 1930 United States Federal Census [32] [33] [34] [35] [36] shows Ben and Ida's family now includes 6 sons. Ida is listed as a "homemaker" and Ben as a welder of metal furniture. The family now resides on Colesville Road in Marilla, New York.
  • Ida's father, Ernst, died on February 6th 1933 in Porterville, Erie, New York [37] [38].
  • Ida and Ben's first daughter, Betty, was born on April 21st 1933 in Bennington, Wyoming, New York [39].
  • Ida and Ben's last two children, twin girls Jane and Jean are born on July 28th 1936 in Colden, Erie, New York [40] [41].
  • Ida's mother, Kate, died on November 20th 1936 in Buffalo, Erie, New York [42] [43].
  • The 1940 United States Federal Census [44] [45] [46] [47] [48] reports that the Ben and Ida Rice family was living in Holland, Erie, New York in 1935 and living on a farm.
  • In 1940, the United States Federal Census [49] [50] [51] lists Ben and Ida's address on Burlingham Street in Holland, Erie, New York. Three daughters have been added to the Rice family which now totals 11, 2 parents, 6 sons, and 3 daughters (including a set of twins.) This address is shown as a rented farm with Ben as a farm laborer and Ida as a housewife.
  • On 24 July 1944 Ida filed her "Application for Social Security Account Number" and showed on it that she was working part time at Moore's Food Shop on Main Street in Holland, New York.
  • Ida's sister, Elizabeth, died on March 25th 1945 in Tonawanda, Erie, New York [52].
  • In the 1950 United States Federal Census [53] [54] [55] Ben (57) and Ida (50) head a household of eight including 6 children still at home, Harlan (24), Bernard (24), Robert (23), Betty (17), Jean (13) and Jane (13). The family lives on a farm on Holland-Glenwood Road in Holland, Erie, New York. Ben and Harlan are shown working as farmers and Bernard and Robert are shown as truck drivers. Ida and the girls are not employed.
  • Ida's sister, Emma died on June 20th 1962 in New York State [56] [57].
  • Ben and Ida lived out their lives in Holland, New York.
  • Ida's husband, Ben, died on September 19th 1969 in Springville, Erie, New York [58] [59].
  • Ida's brother, Ernest died on September 11th 1973 at Buffalo, Erie, New York [60] [61].
  • Ida's brother, Leonard, died on June 17th 1978 in Varysburg, Wyoming, New York [62].
  • Ida passed away on August 26, 1986 [63] [64] [65] [66] [67] [68] in Springville, Erie, New York.
  • Ida was laid to rest in the Holland Cemetery in Holland, New York [69] [70] [71].
