Biography

• Edwin Louis Schwedt was born in Porterville, Marilla, Erie, New York on August 10th 1911 [1] [2] [3] to Ernst Schwedt and Katherine Lamb. Ed was the last of the nine children born to the marriage, 4 boys and 5 girls, William (1895), Elizabeth (1896), Jennie (1898), Ida (1899), Rose (1902), Leonard (1904), Emma (1906), Ernest (1908), and Edwin (1911).
• The 1920 United States Federal Census [4] [5] [6] [7] finds an 8 year old Edwin living with his parents and 2 brothers and 2 sisters in their own farm in Marilla, Erie, New York. Dad, Ernst, is a general farmer.
• The 1925 New York, State Census [8] [9] shows Ernst (55), Kate (52), Edwin (13) and his brothers Leonard (20) and Ernest (16) living in Marilla, Erie, New York with dad, Ernst and son, Leonard, both farming.
• The 1930 United States Federal Census [10] [11] [12] [13] for Marilla Township, Erie, New York shows Ernst and Kate with Ed (18) and Ernest (21) living on a farm they own. Ernst and Ernest are farming and Ed is laboring in a foundry.
• Edwin's father, Ernst Schwedt died on February 6th 1933 in Porterville (Marilla), Erie, New York. [14]
• Edwin's mother, Katherine Lamb Schwedt died on November 20th 1936 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. [15]
• Edwin Louis Schwedt married Bessie Mae Dobyns in 1938 [16] [17]. The announcement of the issuance of their marriage license appeared in The Paris News, Paris, Texas, Fri, 10 Jun 1938, pg 6. They had two children, both girls thought to still be living, who were born one in 1939 [18] [19] and the second in 1944 [20].
• Ed completed his World War II Draft Registration Card [21] on October 16th 1940 in Antlers, Pushmataha, Oklahoma. He shows "General Delivery, Antlers" as the address for he and Bessie - there was no place to show children. He is employed at Roy and Ed Jackson Service Station in Antlers. He is described as a US Citizen, married, white, 6 feet tall, 175 pounds, blue eyes, black hair, and light brown complexion.
• The 1942 City Directory for Richmond, California [22], shows Ed and Bessie living on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito with Ed employed as a bodyman for Richmond Motor Company.
• A newspaper article appearing in the San Bernardino Sun, San Bernardino, Calif, Vol 54, Number 170, 16 Mar 1948, page 7 tells us that Ed in 1948 was the owner of a paint shop at 409 East Ninth in the city of San Bernardino. The article was reporting a break in and robbery of more than $400.00 worth of equipment.
• The 1949 City Directory for San Bernardino, California [23] lists Ed at 889 Mountain View Avenue.
• In the 1950 United States Federal Census [24] [25] we find Ed (38), Bessie (29), and daughters Alice Catherine (11) and Phyllis Sandra (5) living at 889 Mountain View in San Bernardino, San Bernardino, California where Ed is a body and fender mechanic for an auto repair facility. Ed indicates the highest grade he has completed is grade 9.
