"Cuthbert Scolfeld had a grant of a crest made to him 6th March 1582, wherein he is stated to be 'sonne and heire of James Scolfeld.'” [1] This is also shown on the pedigree chart on page 363 of The History of the Parish of Rochdale.
Prior to 1561, Cuthbert Schofield married Ann Halgh, the illegitimate daughter of Sir John Byron and Ann the wife of George Halgh of Halgh, near Manchester. In 1561 Cuthbert filed a suit in the Bishop's Court of Chester for a divorce from "the Lady Birron's daughter" on the plea of adultery. Cuthbert Schofield had two children out of wedlock with Jane Langley [2]:
The Rochdale Parish Register notes, “b 1588, baptized Alexander, filius of Mr. Cuthbeard Scofeld et Jane Langley“ and “1590 (b), John, filius of Mr. Cuthbeard Scofeld et Jane Langley” - note that the “b” in both these entries means base born or illegitimate.
Since Cuthbert did not have any legitimate heirs, his estate, along with Scholefield Hall, eventually went to his nephew, Gerrard Schofield.
Since he didn't marry Jane Langley (abt.1565-1590), she has been detached as his spouse. =
