Biography

Sarah Elizabeth Scroggin is the daughter of Carter Tarrent Scroggin, a native of Kentucky and Pheby (Shelby) Scroggin, a native of North Carolina, who each migrated with their parents to the Territory of Illinois and settled in Sangamon, which became Gallatin county, in 1812. In 1818, Pope county, Illinois was formed out of that portion of the country, and in 1839 Logan county was established. Sarah was born circa 1828, in Pope county, but her records are housed in Logan county, Illinois. [1] (see notes)

Sarah married John H. Lucas, son of Thomas Lucas and Sarah (Hoblit) Lucas, originally from Ohio. Sarah is listed as Head of Household on the United States Census of 1870, with her husband and ten children ages 2 to 20, living in the household. [2]

Researcher's Notes

Some transcriptions of the 1870 Census list John H. Lucas as John N. Lucas. An image of the census is available to view at the FamilySearch source cited, and the H. could be transcribed as either an N. or an H. but the names of the children are listed to insure this is the same family.
