Biography

Birth and Parents

Stephen was the second son of Henry le Scrope[1][2][3] and his wife Joan, whose family origins are not known. His older brother Geoffrey died in his father's lifetime, so he was his father's main heir. He was said to be age 40 and more in 1392[4] when his father died, pointing to a birth date of no later than 1351. As he was old enough in 1360 to serve as an Esquire in France,[4][5] he may have been born about 1345. His parents had lands in several counties, and it is not known where he was born.

Marriage and Children

Before 15 December 1376 Stephen married Margery Welles,[4][6] daughter of John de Welles and Maud de Roos, and widow of John de Huntingfield.[2][3][7] They had the following children children:

Life

In 1360 Stephen served as an esquire in the English forces at Paris. He subsequently joined a crusading army under Peter de Lusignan, who knighted him in October 1365 following the capture of Alexandria, Egypt.[4][5] In 1373 he served with John of Gaunt in Guienne.[4]

Stephen was first summoned to Parliament in 1392.[2][3] He undertook a range of government functions in Yorkshire in the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV.[4]

Richard II awarded him an annuity of 100 marks in July 1399.[4]

Lands

Stephen held lands at Masham and elsewhere in Yorkshire, and also in Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, London, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire.[2][3][6][8]

Death

Stephen died on 25 January 1405/6.[8] He was buried in his family's chapel at York Minster.[2][3][4] His main heir was his son Henry.[8] In his will (dated 5 January 1405-6), among other provisions he:[5][9]'

  • requested burial in York Minster
  • made bequests to
    • his wife Margery
    • his son Henry and Henry's wife Philippa
    • his sons John, William, Stephen and Galfrid
    • his "sister" Elizabeth, possibly Elizabeth Stratbogie, wife of his brother John

His wife survived him, dying in 1422.[2][3][6]

Research Notes

Disambiguation

Stephen should not be confused with Sir Stephen Scrope of Bentley, Yorkshire, whose will was dated 6 January 1405.[10]

Daughters

Nichols Harris Nicolas's work on the Scrope-Grosvenor controversy does not give a first name to the daughter who married Baldwin Freville, and says that Stephen's daughter Maud became a nun in the Minors, London.[5] They were the same person: Maud married Baldwin, and became a nun after Baldwin's death - see her profile.

This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail from Mary Wolseley-16 to Robert de Ros-149 that is being developed by the Magna Carta Project. I will soon be adding the project as co-manager of the profile along with a project box and project section under the Acknowledgements heading. Thanks!
