Biography

John Seamans was born in Swansea, Massachusetts in 1695, the son of Thomas and Susannah (Salisbury) Seamans. He married Priscilla Wood in Swansea in 1718. According to Lawton's book, their children were all born in Swansea, and then they moved to Rhode Island and lived in Scituate and in Foster. From the same source, these children were

  • William b. 2 January 1720/1721
  • Susannah b. 16 August 1723
  • Penelope b. 2 March 1725/1726
  • John b. 4 October 1728
  • Priscilla b. 15 July 1731
  • Tabitha b. 4 December 1733
  • Anna b. 19 January 1735
  • Lydia b. 19 January 1737
  • Benjamin b. 26 June 1740
  • Daniel b. 8 December 1742

He states further that John gifted deeds to several of these children in Scituate starting in 1748, so the move seems to have occurred in the 1740s.

Research

John appears as head of household in Scituate in the 1774 census of Rhode Island[1]. The age/sex distribution and inferred attributions are
  • three white males over 16: John and unknown
  • two white males under 16: unknown
  • four white females over 16: Priscilla and unknown
  • two white females under 16: unknown

It appears that the household of a younger couple may have been living with John.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
