Melissa (age 62, b. AL) and husband, James Green (age 70, b. GA), were enumerated in the 1900 census of Winston County, Alabama. She was listed as Malissie in this census.

Melissa was enumerated in the household of her daughter, Beulah, and son-in-law, Thomas, during the 1910 census. She was listed as Melisa A. Green, 71 years old, born in Alabama.

The story passed down:

Mary Ann Margaret (Green) Barton (Melissa's daughter) received a telegraph from her sister who was living in Mississippi. "Come quick. Mother dying." With heavy heart, Mary answered back, "Can't come. Husband dying." Mary's husband, Andrew Jonathan Barton, died in 1914. [1]
