Biography

Philip Shattuck was a doctor in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts with some standing in the community. He was the second reputable physician in Watertown, estimated to practice there from about 1670 to 1722. He is also reported to have lived in the northeast part of Waltham; if correct, however, it’s not known what years Waltham was his residence. He was living in Watertown in 1670 (when first married) and in 1696 (representing Watertown residents in a church dispute), and both his wives were from Watertown. Watertown and Waltham are separated today by a distance of three miles. [Bond: p. 1074 #237 2nd par.; p. 933 #[15]]

On November 9, 1670, Philip Shattuck married Deborah, daughter of William and Anna Barstow. On April 6, 1671, Deborah’s uncle Michael Barstow of Watertown, “for love and affection to kinswoman Deborah, wife of Phillip Shattuck, of Wat., [gave] to Phillip and Deborah 6 acres ...” Coming five months after Philip and Deborah’s marriage, Deborah’s father being deceasd, and her uncle Michael having no children, the gift may have been a marriage portion to the couple. [Bond: p. 933 #[15]]

On February 9, 1680 (1679 old style), Philip, apparently now a widower, married Rebecca Chamberlin in Watertown. [Bond: p. 152 “Chamberlin”]

In 1691, Dr. Philip Shattuck acquired a mortage for a corn mill and 30 acres of land in Watertown from Thomas Rider. [Bond: p. 1039 #142]

In 1696, when the church of Watertown selected a preacher, Philip Shattuck and others were chosen to represent those who lived in “the middle part” of town to debate certain matters of difference. [Bond: pp. 1052-3 #183]

It is reported also that Philip had two sons bearing his own name and living at the same time, one by each of his wives. Some legal documents designate Philip Shattuck as a weaver, which may refer to one of the sons. [Bond: p. 933 #[15]]
