Wilfred Christopher Herbert Shaw was born in 1892 at Tufnell Park in London He was the son of Christopher Jackson Shaw and his wife Laura, born Laura Ellen Davis. ^{[1] [2] [3]}

In 1901 Wilfred was living at 81 London Road in Hackney in London with his parents Christopher and Laura and their other children. His age was given as 8, implying a birth date in 1892 or 1893. His birthplace was given as Tufnell Park, Oxford. [Both his name, which has been written as "Winifred”, and birthplace, which has been confused or confounded with his mother's, on the previous line, are problematic.] ^[2]

In 1911 the Wilfred C. H. Shaw was living at 72 Mill Road in Belvedere in Kent with his widowed mother Laura Shaw, his brother Bernard, and his uncle Herbert Shaw. His age was given as 18, implying a birth date in 1892 or 1893. His birthplace was given as Tufnell Park, London. He was employed as clerk by a provision merchant. ^[3]

Why this profile is for Wilfred, rather than "Winifred", Shaw

"Winifred" Shaw, born in "Oxford, Tufnell Park", is based on an entry in the 1901 census. The birthplace is represented by ditto marks from the mother's entry. ^[2] But there are a number of problems:

The entry says "son", not daughter. And some annotation has been written next to the entry, perhaps because "Winifred" and "son" seem inconsistent.

There is a birth registration for a Wilfred Christopher Herbert Shaw in Islington registration district in 1892, with mother's maiden name "Davis". ^[1]

In 1911, a Wilfred C. H. Shaw, aged 18, and born at Tufnell Park, London, was living with the widowed Laura Ellen Shaw and 16 year old Bernard Gascoigne Shaw. Laura's birthplace was given as Oxford. ^[3]

The way to resolve this is to assume that the 1901 entry is somewhat erroneous, as follows:

• the name should be "Wilfred"
• his birthplace should be just "Tufnell Park" (that is, in London)
• his mother's birthplace should be just "Oxford"
