Simon was born in Pepperell, MA April 14, 1765[1] and christened April 25.[2] in Pepperell, Massachusetts.
We are fortunate to be given a partial physical description of Simon through a military record. He was among those “raised in Middlesex Co. to reinforce the Continental Army, agreeable to resolve of June 9, 1779, as returned by Brig. Gen. Eleazer Brooks to Maj. Hosmer, dated Lincoln, Aug. 18, 1779; Col. Reed’s regt.; age 16 yrs.; stature 5 ft.; complexion, light; residence, Pepperell; engaged for town of Pepperell; also…”[3] One of his military records notes “[See Simen Shade] Name meant for Shedd”. [4]
About the time of his marriage to Lucy Dole in 1786, after his service in the war, The Shedd Genealogy informs us he settled in what is now Milford, NH in the area called Duxbury Mill Slip, seen there in the 1790 census. At that time there was 1 male over 16 and 4 females in the home.[citation needed] He and later moved his family to Adams, Jefferson, NY about 1800. They had 5 children likely born in Milford, NY and 6 born in New York.[5] During the 1810 census he appears next door to David Smith, son in law, living in Lorraine, Jefferson, New York.[6]
