Polly Shedd Smith placed her X on a DeKalb Co., Indiana land deed, without David, the sale dated 1859. The land described corresponds with the description on the deed that Cordelia and her sister Lucy, signed in 1863.[citation needed][3] It appears that David didn’t buy land in Ohio. But there is a patent issued to him November 10, 1841 for 40 acres within the NE1/4 of the SW1/4 of Range 13 East, Township 35 North, 2nd Prime Meridian, being Smithfield, DeKalb County, Indiana.[4]

As of 2022 the David Smith family doesn’t appear in a search of the Indiana Archives but it is continually being added to.[5]
