Biography

Hannah Sheldon was born on August 9, 1684, in Northampton, Massachusetts, to John Sheldon and Hannah Stebbins. On June 26, 1701, 18-year-old Hannah married 28-year old, Joseph Catlin, son of John Catlin and Mary Baldwin. Joseph Catlin was killed on Feb 29, 1704, during the Deerfield Massacre. He was one of seven who defended the Stebbins house. Hannah, pregnant, was wounded during the fight and taken to Northampton, Mass., where she gave birth to Joseph's son, John, in May. She was ransomed in 1706[1][2]


"3, Joseph, s. of John (2), he was one of the seven brave men who defended the Benoni Stebbins house 1704, and one of the nine who fell in the Meadow fight. He m. June 26, 1701, Hannah, dau. Ens. John Sheldon; she was in the Benoni Stebbins house with her husband and was wounded in the attack; she was carried to Nhn., where she m. Oct. 26, 1705, Nath'l Clark of Nhn.; she d. July 13, 1764, a. 81."[3]

In 1705 Hannah Sheldon Catlin married Nathaniel Clark, son of John Clark and Mary Strong. Nathaniel had fought alongside Hannah's late husband in the Deerfield Attack. Hannah and Nathaniel had seven children together. Hannah died in 1764 and Nathiel died in 1767.

"Nathaniel, May 13, 1681; m. Oct. 26, 1705 Hannah, dau. John Sheldon, wid. of Joseph Catlin, who was k. on the meadows, 1704; both had been defenders of the Benoni Stebbins house before she was widowed; he d. Nov. 23, 1767.[4]
