Jacob was born in Pennsylvania, and was of German descent. He moved to Wayne County, Ohio, in 1828. He moved back to Pennsylvania in 1830 in order to sell his land there, and then back to Ohio where he spent the remainder of his life.
Jacob acquired 900 acres of land during his lifetime. [1] He was a member of the Mennonite Church.[1] Moved to Wayne County from Cumberland County, PA in 1828.
Jacob and Eliza's children:
Elizabeth, wife of John Yocum, once of Mercer County, Ohio[1][2]
Michael Shelly b. 1811 Cumberland Co, PA, of Wayne County, Ohio. Moved to Wayne County in 1828. Married 1835 to Elizabeth Houser, b. PA, daughter of Jacob and Catherine Houser.[1]
Catherine, wife of Joseph Springer, Wayne County, Ohio[1][2]
Jacob erected many structures in Wayne County. One of the most notable was a barn that burned in 2012, after having been fully restored anda tourist spot for a number of years.[3] The barn is considered very Pennsylvania German in style, laying the brick in such a style being incredibly difficult and taking a highly skilled builder. It was originally built in 1835. Jacob first built a log cabin on the land, but dismantled it when he later built the barn in order the reuse the timbers for it instead. It measured 70 by 40 feet. A large brick home was later built in 1840. The house still stands and was also restored.
