Biography

Jacob Shotwell was born on June 14, 1721 at Union Co., New Jersey. Jacob's family were prominent contributors to the success of their Quaker communities both on Long Island and New Jersey. There was an observable level of aspiration and advancement in the family patterns, Jacob's father John Jr had served an apprenticeship in Philadelphia, then sought out his wife Mary Thorne from the Flushing Long Island community, finally establishing himself in Shotwell's Landing and Plainfield.

Jacob's accomplishment was being a successful merchant in Rahway and with his wife Eleanor eminent elder leaders in the Quaker community. Jacob's son Eden, went to New York City as an apprentice, then was then married and was a merchant in New York then later Philadelphia. Jacob's daughter Hannah, with her husband Isaac, courageously adapted and accepted the challenge of e Westward migration out of New Jersey first to the Pennsylvania frontier, and then down the Ohio River to claim new farm land of southern Ohio. Hannah and Isaac were 2nd cousins both carrying bloodlines from shotwells and the notable Flushing Thornes and Bownes

Jacob was a Great Grandson of the Historic Flushing couple Hannah Feake and John Bowne, who received a significant lengthy treatment in A M Shotwell, Annals. The Feake Ancestry included detailed information on John Underhill, the Winthrops (Governors of Massachusetts, followed by Connecticut), from Browne, Gardiner, Tudor ancestry.

Jacob married Eleanor Haydock, daughter of Robert Haydock of Penketh and Rebekah Griffith, on January 8, 1746 on Long Island (A M Shotwell, Annals). Eleanor's family, underscored by her grandfather's close connection to William Penn, were clearly very significant members of the Quaker community. The Haydock family roots are in Lancashire England and can be tracked back to 12th Century origins.

After Eleanor's death Jacob married 2nd wife, Katharine Tilton

Children

  • Hannah Shotwell, b Mar 20 1749, d Jan 28 1770, m. Isaac Thorne
  • Eden Shotwell b Jun 7 1755; m Mary Haydock

Child of Katharine Tilton and Jacob

  • Nathan Shotwell b. 1768, d. 1848 m. Sarah Fitz Randolph.

Hannah was a family name from the Shotwell's Bownes; Eden was a Haydock family name. Nathan was a Tilton family name.

Jacob Shotwell died on June 14, 1793 at age 72.

To be helpful on the Shotwell One Name Study, I would call attention to one incorrect listing in the Ambrose Shotwell Big Book. In reference to Jacobs eldest child Hannah, her marriage was to Isaac Thorne ( a 2nd cousin), Not to Isaac Shotwell. Isaac Thorne is a Shotwell descendant of Abraham, John, Elizabeth, Abraham Thorne.
