John was a Friend (Quaker)

Biography

John Shotwell Jr. was born in about 1686 in New York, to John Shotwell Sr and Elizabeth Burton.

John's father had property on Staten Island in addition to the property he inherited in New Jersey and New York City after the death of his father Abraham . The records are unclear when the family began residing at Shotwell's Landing (Rahway), but it could have started very close to the time of his birth.

John married Mary Thorne on November 8, 1709 in Flushing, Queens. [1] Their known children:

Will of John Shotwell[2]of the Borrough Elizabeth, Essex Co., dated the 10th day of the Second month 1759. Proved and Probate granted June 26th, 1762. Wife Mary; sons, John, Abraham, Samuel, Benjamin, Jacob, Joseph; daughter, Mary Marsh; executors, sons Joseph and Benjamin; witnesses, David Brant, Charles Howel, Benjn Jenkins; recorded in Liber H. of Wills, pages 156 &c.3. John3 Shotwell, Jr., 168(i±-1763, of Shotwell's Landing, [of John2, Abraham'], (pp. 124-13i).

Daughter Elizabeth Shotwell, making some revisions, this is note from Shotwell Name Study page.
PROFILE Being REVISED:Elizabeth Shotwell WebsterName: Elizabeth Shotwell, Birth Date: 9 Apr 1715 - Birth Date on Image 09 Second 1715 - Birth Place: Rahway New Jersey - Father: John Shotwell Jr - Mother: Mary Shotwell - Event Type: Birth - Monthly Meeting: Rahway and Plainfield [Source: Swarthmore College; Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Births 1705-1901 Deaths -1705-1908 Marriages, 1712-1885; Collection: U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935. Quaker Meeting Records; Call Number: MR Ph:660]

The timing of the move closer to the Quaker community at Plainfield Woodbridge probably occurred before his marriage to Mary Thorne. It was clear at the time marriage intentions were recorded that Mary had membership in Flushing and John had Woodbridge Rahway membership. That doesn't fully explain location of their families - it could have been another town while they retained MM membership as stated. Eventually. John and Mary would have a residence at Shotwell's Landing in Rahway. [3] [4]

Y-DNA

There seems to be at least one Shotwell male descendant who has taken a Y-DNA test, and it indicates that the Shotwells were apparently in Haplogroup R1b. [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Why is Governor Winthrop’s picture here? Was he a relative?
posted by Ellen Gustafson
That may have been a slip up on my part. Gov Winthrop was realated to Mary Thorne, the wife of Shotwell-23. And her profile has the Winthrop image that I have just removed. Mary Thorne’s GGM (Elizabeth) was the famous “Withrop Woman” and quite a bit about Winthrop appears in the Shotwell annals so I dont think there is any dispute that Winthrop legacy is relevant here just a couple generations later. Another observation that may be relevant is the distinct impression I gathered from sources such as Shotwell Annals, that the Spouses such as Mary, from the Flushing LI Quaker community, were judged as very desirable additions to the Plainfield-Woodbridge-Rahway families

Seems to me that their daughter Mary Shotwell (born 1717) was too young to have married Samuel Marsh about 1728. Instead she was probably his second wife Mary Shotwell who he married about 1743.

The first wife of Samuel Marsh was supposedly also named Mary Shotwell, but who was she the daughter of? Could she be the daughter of Daniel Shotwell, the Mary Shotwell who married Abraham Thorne in 1717, and then presumably divorced from him by 1728?

But some say that they had a daughter Mary Shotwell (b. 1707), who would be the right age to married Samuel Marsh about 1728. But why would they have two different daughters named Mary (one in 1707 and another in 1717) if both survived?

I am in process this week of clarifying merges and hopefully making them happen for several generations of this family.

Short answer is that I would recommend merge of Shotwell-65, and Shotwell-33 and 23 My merger and profile attention is on Abraham, then son John Shotwell-25, then John's wife Elizabeth Burton-275 & 5070, then Johns Son, John Shotwell Jr who has multiple profiles Shotwell-23, -33, -65. and Shotwell Jr wife has multiple.

If we leave too many loose unattached profiles we will repeat the can of worms and make worse when someone starts connecting up here at top of the Pedigree. Thanks Mark for input

I would like individuals with profile clearance to respond ASAP, so that no one feels like they were not in the loop

Shotwell-65 and Shotwell-33 do not represent the same person because: To be resubmitted to merge Shotwell-65 into lower Shotwell-23.
